April, 2021—MEDICC Review dedicates its April issue to V. Gustavo Sierra-González MD PhD (1952–2021), an eminent Cuban immunologist who has died from COVID-19. The full editorial statement below:

“A loss for Cuba, Latin America and the world: immunologist and biotechnology pioneer Dr Gustavo Sierra has died from complications of COVID-19. An initiator of Cuba’s biotechnology takeoff in the late 1980s, he was a founder of the Finlay Vaccine Institute and the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center, as well as among the first leaders of the BioCubaFarma conglomerate and the first President of the Cuban Society of Immunology. At the time of his death, he chaired the Expert Committee of Cuba’s National Immunization Program and served as Advisor to the President of BioCubaFarma.

“Credited to Dr Sierra is authorship of the world’s first effective vaccine against serogroup B meningococcal disease in 1989, a patent for which his team won the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Gold Medal. Earlier, he was among the researchers who obtained Cuba’s first interferons.

“These accomplishments, together with his later work on a host of other vaccines, earned him the country’s highest award, the Carlos J. Finlay Order, as well as honors from the Health and Science Workers Union and distinguished membership in the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

“He was advisor to some 45 doctoral dissertations, among his responsibilities as teacher, mentor and guide to generations of physicians, scientists and scholars.

“Dr Sierra was a peer reviewer and author for MEDICC Review, his most recent manuscript published in 2019 recounting the history and use of the meningitis B vaccine in Cuba and the world (Cuban Meningococcal Vaccine VA-MENGOC-BC: 30 Years of Use and Future Potential).

“He was appreciated and loved by his family and so many others for his modesty, wisdom, good humor and boundless solidarity.

“Our editors have lost a friend and colleague. The world has lost a vaccine hero.”

27 de abril de 2021—MEDICC Review dedica el número de abril al Médico y Doctor en Ciencias V. Gustavo Sierra-González (1952-2021), eminente inmunólogo cubano quien ha fallecido víctima de la COVID-19. A continuación, el texto íntegro del editorial:

“Una pérdida para Cuba, Latinoamérica y el mundo: el inmunólogo y pionero de la biotecnología Dr. Gustavo Sierra ha fallecido como consecuencia de complicaciones derivadas de la COVID-19. Fue iniciador de los primeros pasos de la biotecnología en Cuba a fines de la década de los 80, fundador del Instituto Finlay y del Centro de Genética y Biotecnología, e integró el grupo de líderes de la empresa BioCubaFarma. Se desempeñó además como Presidente de la Sociedad Cubana de Inmunología. En el momento de su muerte se encontraba al frente del Comité de Expertos del Programa Nacional de Inmunización de Cuba y servía en calidad de asesor al Presidente de BioCubaFarma.

“Tiene en su haber la autoría en 1989 de la primera vacuna en el mundo eficaz contra el meningococo del serogrupo B, cuya patente le valió a su equipo de trabajo la Medalla de Oro de la Organización Mundial para la Propiedad Intelectual. Anteriormente formó parte del grupo de investigadores que produjo los primeros interferones en Cuba.

“Estos logros, y otros que más tarde alcanzó con otras vacunas, le merecieron la más alta distinción que otorga el país: la Orden Carlos J. Finlay; así como honores del Sindicato Nacional de los Trabajadores de la Salud y de la Ciencia y el ser miembro distinguido de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba.

“Fue asesor en unas 45 disertaciones doctorales como parte de sus responsabilidades de profesor, mentor y guía de generaciones de médicos, científicos y académicos.

“El Dr. Sierra fue también árbitro y autor de la revista MEDICC Review. Su aporte más reciente fue un artículo publicado en 2019 que relata la historia y uso de la vacuna contra la meningitis B en Cuba y en el mundo. (Cuban Meningococcal Vaccine VA-MENGOC-BC: 30 Years of Use and Future Potential). 

“Fue el Dr. Sierra un hombre muy apreciado y querido por su familia y por muchos debido a su modestia, sabiduría, buen humor e infinita solidaridad.

 “Nuestros editores han perdido un amigo y colega. El mundo ha perdido un héroe de las vacunas.”
