Lázaro Alfonso Novo, MD, MS

Pediatrician with dual master’s degrees in nutrition and comprehensive pediatric care. Dr Alfonso is chief of Clinical Nutrition Services at the William Soler Pediatric Teaching Hospital in Havana, where he is also a member of the Scientific Council and the Liver Transplant Group. He is an associate professor at the Enrique Cabrera Medical School in Havana, coordinator of the Havana City Provincial Health Department’s Maternal-Child Nutrition Network, and a member of the Ministry of Public Health’s Maternal- Child Nutrition Group as well as its Maternal-Child Health Program Expert Committee.


Ricardo Anillo Badía, MD, PhD, MSpMed

Dual specialist in sports medicine and family medicine. Dr Anillo is a full professor at the Enrique Cabrera Medical School in Havana. In 1993, he founded the Ultrasound Imaging Department at the Cuban Sports Medicine Institute (IMD), where he is a member of the Scientific Council and head professor of Musculoskeletal System Ultrasound Imaging, and Sports Medicine and Trauma. He is the author of numerous articles on imaging and traumatology in high-performance sports, as well as the book Ecografía del Aparato Locomotor, which received the National Medical Sciences Award in 2004. His current research focuses on diagnostic ultrasound imaging as a complementary method of injury prevention in high-performance athletes.


Wiliam Carvajal Veitía, MS

Anthropologist. Professor Carvajal directs the Kinanthropometry Laboratory at the Cuban Sports Medicine Institute (IMD), where he is also an assistant professor and a member of the Scientific Council. He is currently conducting research on secular acceleration in Cuban athletes and on the morphology of high-performance athletes.


Mario Granda Fraga, MD, MSpMed

Sports medicine specialist with a master’s degree in medical management of athletic training. Dr Granda directs the Cuban Sports Medicine Institute (IMD) and its anti-doping laboratory, and is a full professor at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana. He is a member of the Cuban Olympic Committee and chairs its Medical Commission. Internationally, he sits on the medical commissions of the International Swimming Federation, the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization (ODECABE), and the Pan American Sports Organization (ODEPA), and has represented Cuba on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Foundation Board. Dr Granda is an associate researcher at the Cuban Academy of Sciences.


Juan de Jesús Llibre Rodríguez, MD, PhD

Specialist in internal medicine. Dr Llibre is a full professor of medicine at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana and head of the clinical medicine department at the Finlay-Albarrán Medical School in Havana. He is president of the Cuban Alzheimer’s Association and board member of Alzheimer’s Disease International and its 10/66 Dementia Research Group. Dr Llibre’s research concentrates on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in Cuba and internationally.
