Edilberto González Ochoa, MD, PhD
Epidemiologist. Dr González directs the Research and Surveillance Group on Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Acute Respiratory Infections of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine, and is a consulting professor at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana where he chairs the master’s degree program in epidemiology. He is internationally recognized for his work on TB surveillance and control, is vice president of the Cuban Society of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and a member of the editorial committee of the Revista Cubana de Higiene y Epidemiología (Cuban Journal of Hygiene and Epidemiology).
Beatriz Marcheco Teruel, MD, PhD
Specialist in clinical genetics. Dr Marcheco is director of Cuba’s National Medical Genetics Center, associate professor at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, and chair of the editorial committee of Revista Cubana de Genética Comunitaria (Cuban Journal of Community Genetics). She is a member of the Ministry of Public Health’s task force on the Human Genome project, and faculty of the master’s degree program in genetic counseling. Her research concentrates on the genetics of neuropsychiatric disorders, and genetics for public health.
Guillermo Mojena Morfa, MD
Specialist in general surgery and cardiovascular surgery. Dr Mojena practices surgery at Cuba’s Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Institute (ICCCV) and is an instructor at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana. In 2003-2004, Dr Mojena assisted in establishing a hospital specializing in heart surgery in the Algerian city of Constantine. His current research interests include off-pump beating heart surgery, minimally invasive video-assisted cardiac surgery, reconstructive heart valve surgery, and cardiac resynchronization therapy in patients with advanced congestive heart failure.
Lilia María Morales Chacón, MD, PhD
Specialist in clinical neurophysiology. Dr Morales is head of clinical neurophysiology services at Havana’s International Center for Neurological Restoration since 1994, and is a full professor at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana. Her current research focuses on neurofunctional pre-, intra- and postoperative evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsy. Dr Morales’ work has received considerable recognition from the scientific community, and she was awarded the Cuban Academy of Sciences’ national prize in 2007.
María Cecilia Pérez Abalo, MD, PhD
Specialist in physiology. Dr Pérez is one of Cuba’s leading medical scientists in hearing and learning disorders, and has spent the last 20 years carrying out research in the field of electric response audiometry, introducing important new technology. She directed the pilot study in Havana for early detection of hearing loss, a screening program extended to the rest of Cuba in 1991. Dr Pérez is a member of Cuba’s national groups for disability studies and cochlear implants. Among her awards is a special recognition from the Mexican government for her contribution to special education in that country, and from the Cuban Academy of Sciences as outstanding woman scientist of the year (2000).
Francisco Rojas Ochoa, MD, PhD
Specialist in health administration and public health. Distinguished professor and researcher at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, Dr Rojas has dedicated nearly 50 years to Cuban public health efforts. He is widely published and, in 2005, received the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Award for Health Administration. His early career included the Rural Medical Service, and he later founded the Institute for Development of Health Sciences. He is editor of the Revista Cubana de Salud Pública (Cuban Journal of Public Health), and a member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences as well as the Editorial Board of MEDICC Review. He has served as a consultant to the UN Population Fund, WHO and PAHO.
Pedro Valdés-Sosa, MD, PhD
Physician with higher degrees in biological sciences and mathematics. Dr Valdés is deputy director of the Cuban Neuroscience Center and coordinates the Center’s national network of neurophysiology laboratories, as well as the Cuban Brain Mapping Project and the Latin American Brain Mapping Network. He is a senior researcher and full professor at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, a member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, and serves on the Editorial Board of MEDICC Review.
