Sonia Águila Setién MD MS
Obstetrician-gynecologist, Eusebio Hernández University Maternity Hospital, Havana, Cuba. Dr Águila’s career of more than 50 years began in Cuba’s Rural Medical Service and has included senior academic, teaching and administrative responsibilities as well as international service. Her current research focuses on severe acute maternal morbidity, Rh hemolytic disease, preterm birth and cesarean section.
Marta Castro Peraza MD MS
Psychiatrist and social epidemiologist at the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute in Havana. Dr Peraza’s research concentrates on community involvement in infectious disease prevention and on comprehensive care and quality of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS.
Gianny Cejas Pérez MD MS
Dual specialist in family medicine and neonatology, Dr Cejas has clinical and research duties in intensive care at Havana’s Ramón González Coro University Maternity Hospital. He is also adjunct professor at Loja National University in Ecuador. His research focuses on neurodevelopment of high-risk neonates.
Jiovanna Contreras Roura MS
Pharmacist at the genetic biochemistry laboratory of Havana’s National Medical Genetics Center. Her research explores applications of laboratory methods to population genetics, such as early diagnosis of hereditary diseases and establishment of reference values for the Cuban population.
Joan F. Fernández de la Vega León MD MS
Internist. Instructor in internal medicine and clinical skills, Calixto Garcia Clinical-Surgical University Hospital. Dr Fernandez’s current research interests are diabetes, prediabetes and vascular complications of diabetes.
Marlene Ferrer MD PhD
Pediatrician. Full professor at Havana’s Atherosclerosis Research Center. Dr Ferrer received the 2012 Academy of Science prize for her research on adolescent overweight, hypertension and smoking. She is currently a professor of postgraduate courses with Cuba’s medical team in Venezuela, where she is also doing research on comprehensive diabetes management in primary health care.
Aimée Festary MD MS
Dual specialist in family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. Head of postpartum care, Ramón González Coro University Maternity Hospital in Havana. Dr Festary’s research includes infectious and noninfectious risks in pregnancy. In 2005, she was a member of the Henry Reeve disaster response contingent that responded to Hurricane Stan in Guatemala.
José Alberto González MD
Family physician and neurology resident at Cuba’s Neurology and Neurosurgery Institute in Havana. Dr González’s main research interests are in cognitive and behavioral neurology. In 2011 he was one of only two Latin Americans to receive a graduate fellowship in neuroscience and behavioral biology offered by Spain’s Carolina Foundation.
Pedro A. Martínez Mahiques MD
Obstetrician-gynecologist. Dr Martínez’s 44-year career spanned teaching, research, clinical and senior administrative responsibilities, in Holguín, Cuba. He also served as a physician in Guinea-Bissau. Retired, he continues research and is now studying growth curves of infants born to adolescent mothers.
Cesar E. Silverio García MD
Dual specialist in family medicine and gastroenterology. Founder and director of the hepatology and liver transplant service at the William Soler University Children’s Hospital in Havana. He has published widely on diverse topics in pediatric hepatology.
