Norma E. Batista Hernández MD
Physician specializing in biostatistics and family medicine. Dr Batista is medical biostatistician in the biomedical research unit of the Medical University of Villa Clara, Cuba, where she focuses on chronic diseases. She is currently completing postgraduate work in biostatistics using spatiotemporal analysis applied to cancer epidemiology. Dr Batista is a member of the ethics network of the Ibero-American Programme for Science, Technology and Development and is editor of Villa Clara’s Revista Medicentro.

Jeddú Cruz Hernández MD MS
Family physician and endocrinologist with a master’s degree in comprehensive women’s health. Dr Cruz is an associate professor and adjunct researcher at the Medical University of Havana. His work in the National Endocrinology Institute’s Diabetic Care Center focuses on endocrine diseases and pregnancy, for which he received the National Health Award in 2009.

Kesia Granela Cortiñas MD
Family physician and pediatric endocrinologist at the Eduardo Piña Agramonte Provincial Clinical-Surgical Pediatric Teaching Hospital, Camagüey, Cuba, where she is also an instructor. On graduation from medical school, she completed her social service in Haiti in 2004–2005. Dr Granela has conducted research on bone density in endocrine disease, diabetes and applications of diagnostic imaging in endocrinology. She is currently completing a master’s degree in nutrition.

Roberto Lardoeyt Ferrer MD PhD
Clinical geneticist and full professor at the National Medical Genetics Center in Havana. Dr Lardoeyt’s research on genetics and disability in populations in several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean has been published widely, earning awards such as Cuba’s Carlos J. Finlay Medal 2009 for his work on developmental delay and other disabilities. He has two books in press, one a textbook on population medical genetics.

Miguel Rodríguez Ramos MD
Physician. Dr Rodríguez was already an active researcher while still a medical student and participated in three national student scientific fora. He completed the research presented in this issue while a student at the Medical University of Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. In September 2013, he will begin his residency in cardiology. This, not his first publication but his first in an international journal, goes to press one week after he was awarded his MD.

Julio Valdivia Arencibia MD PhD
Nephrologist. Full professor, senior researcher and head of nephrology at the Medical-Surgical Research Center in Havana. Earlier, Dr Valdivia established the nephrology service at the Gustavo Alderegía Lima Provincial Teaching Hospital in Cienfuegos. His research has garnered many honors, including Cuba’s Antonio Briones Montoto and Carlos J. Finlay Medals and the Cuban Academy of Science’s annual award (2009).
