Carlos Aragonés López BEng MS
Informatics engineer with a master’s degree in epidemiology. He heads the biostatistics and informatics department at the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute, Havana, where he is also an instructor and associate researcher. Mr Aragonés conducts research on a range of issues related to HIV/AIDS, including adherence to therapy, drug resistance, vulnerability and quality of life. He also heads the national network of Cuba’s community-based AIDS Prevention Groups.
Nurys B. Armas Rojas MD
Epidemiologist. Dr Armas is an assistant professor at the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, Havana, where she is responsible for the prevention department’s academic program and coordinates residency modules in research and biostatistics. She is currently a member of the research team conducting the Tobacco or Health megastudy in Cuba.
Elizabeth Fernández Martínez MS
Neuropsychologist. On staff at Cuba’s International Neurological Restoration Center (CIREN), Havana, Ms Fernández directs CIREN’s computerized cognitive rehabilitation program. Her research and clinical practice focus on neuropsychological diagnosis and cognitive rehabilitation of patients with acquired brain injury, and she is also involved in counseling and education of patients’ family members.
Edilberto R. González Ochoa MD PhD
Epidemiologist. Dr González is full consulting professor and distinguished researcher at the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute, Havana, where he chairs the master’s degree program in epidemiology. He is internationally recognized for his work on TB surveillance and control, is vice president of the Cuban Society of Hygiene and Epidemiology and president of its respiratory health section.
Linh Cu Le MD MSc PhD
Physician with an engineering degree in information technology, master’s degree in applied development and doctorate in public health. He is associate professor in public health at the Hanoi School of Public Health, Vietnam, where he chairs the demography department and is vice head of the faculty of health management. His research interests include reproductive health, HIV prevention, adolescent health, injury and violence prevention, and public health education.
Isabel P. Luis Gonzálvez MS
Nurse specializing in public health and epidemiology with a master’s degree in bioethics. She is assistant professor and research candidate at the National Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology Institute, Havana. Ms Luis’s research addresses health services organization and quality, as well as primary health care contributions to population health and patient satisfaction.
Beatriz Marcheco Teruel MD PhD
Clinical geneticist. Dr Marcheco is director of Cuba’s National Medical Genetics Center, Havana, where she is full professor and senior researcher. Her research concentrates on the genetics of neuropsychiatric disorders, genetics for population health, and technology assessment for medical genetics. She is a member of the Ministry of Public Health’s task force on the Human Genome Project and faculty of the master’s degree program in genetic counseling.
Víctor René Navarro Machado MD PhD
Specialist in intensive care and emergency medicine. He is associate professor and associate researcher at the Dr Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University General Hospital in Cienfuegos. He heads the hospital’s clinical trials division and the Medical University of Cienfuegos’ health and disasters department. He is a member of Cuba’s national commission on hospital safety and disaster preparedness, and researches a range of issues related to emergency medicine and disaster response.
Luis Carlos Silva Ayçaguer PhD DrSc
Mathematician and biostatistician. A full professor and senior researcher at Cuba’s National Medical Sciences Information Center, Havana, Dr Silva’s work on statistical methods for epidemiologic research has been widely published internationally and earned him membership in Cuba’s Academy of Sciences.
