Anselmo A. Abdo Cuza MD MS PhD
Internist and specialist in intensive care and emergency medicine. Full professor, Medical University of Havana, and head of intensive care and transplant coordination, Medical-Surgical Research Center, Havana. Dr Abdo has published extensively in Cuba and internationally on a range of issues in urgent care and has received three national awards for his research. He is principal investigator on a project to reduce nosocomial infections in Cuban intensive care units.
Rafael A. Gómez Baute MD
Dual specialist in hematology and family medicine. Assistant professor, hematology service, Dr Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University General Hospital, Cienfuegos, and assistant professor of transfusion medicine at the Medical University of Cienfuegos. His current research addresses acute leukemia survival, clinical applications of hematopoietic stem cells and blood safety.
Ricardo A. González Menéndez MD PhD DrSc
Psychiatrist. Consulting professor at the Enrique Cabrera Medical Faculty of the Medical University of Havana and consultant to the teaching service at the Rogelio Paredes Psychiatric Hospital in Havana. Dr González is a member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the Cuban Psychiatric Society; and is president of the National Medical Ethics Commission and the Academic Committee for Training on Alcoholism and other Addictions. He has published over 25 books on psychiatry, medical ethics and addiction.
Ricardo Hodelín MD MS PhD
Neurosurgeon. Senior researcher and associate professor, Saturnino Lora Clinical-Surgical Teaching Hospital, Santiago de Cuba, Dr Hodelín chairs the bioethics program at the Medical University of Santiago de Cuba and is a member of the Cuba’s National Bioethics Committee and the National Commission for Death Determination and Certification. A senior researcher in Cuba’s Academy of Sciences, he has more than 150 scientific publications to his credit, including three books, and has received multiple national awards for his research, which currently addresses disorders of consciousness and related ethical dilemmas.
Nelcy Martínez Trujillo MPH
Nurse with a master’s degree in public health and a diploma in medical education. Associate professor and adjunct researcher at the National School of Public Health, Ms Martínez has multiple Cuban and international publications on health systems and services research. Her article in this issue is based on research undertaken toward her doctoral degree in public health. She is a member of the Cuban Nursing Society and of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Internacional.
Marta Pernas Gómez MD MS
Physician specializing in normal and pathological physiology. Dr Pernas is full and consulting professor at the Dr Salvador Allende Medical Sciences Faculty, Medical University of Havana, and has published in Cuba and internationally on bronchial asthma, respiratory physiology and medical education. She is currently involved in redesign of the Human Morphophysiology program in Cuba’s medical curriculum.
Frank Quintana Gómez MD MS
Immunologist and medical educator. Dr Quintana is rector and associate professor of the Medical University of Villa Clara. His biomedical research interests include tumor immune therapy and renal transplant immunology and he has also published extensively on medical education. He has been a consultant to the University of Durango in Mexico on competency-based medical education.
Idalia Triana Casado MD MPH
Ophthalmologist with a master’s degree in public health. Dr Triana is in the ophthalmology department of the Dr Salvador Allende Hospital in Havana and is also associate professor of ophthalmology at the Medical University of Havana. Her current research interests are glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa. She is completing a doctorate in medical sciences.
